Negative feedback is key

I came across an interesting info-graphic discussing how to deliver negative feedback which I felt I should share.

We know the reality, we do have criticisms of members of our team; whether it be their work, attitude etc. For many, the idea of having ‘the talk’ can be slightly daunting. How to give negative feedback is something that leaders must learn.

The infographic lists a number of do’s and don’ts. The first I wish to share is sugar-coating, a common thing seen when negative feedback is being delivered. What we often see is the “sandwich approach”, book-ending your negative feedback with two pieces of positive feedback. This disrupts the message.

In the same way we do not wish for unsatisfied clients to stay quiet or sugar-coat how we are doing; our team members don’t wish for that either. Whilst everyone reacts to criticism differently (and so our approach must be tailored in certain circumstances), generally, the best approach will be to outline your criticisms separately to any positives.

Linked closely to this is of course; be specific. Avoiding vague criticisms will allow greater clarity of the message.

Negative feedback is not something anyone particularly enjoys doing, but it does stand as a major part of leadership.

Get it right and you’ll have a winning team.
